Homemade beauty treats

As the summer is all about looking good, we thought we'd do something different in What's Cooking this month!

We all know that plenty of salads, fish and fresh fruit and veg are key to keeping lean all summer long, but what about our skin, complexion and hair? Sun, sea and sand can wreak havoc on our bodies, but with a few key ingredients, you can whip up some beauty treats in your kitchen in no time at all.

Gorgeous body polisher

Great for preparing your body for self-tanning or for cleansing sun-soaked skin after a day on the beach

Ingredients:

  • 475ml (16.7 fl oz) plain yoghurt
  • 1 tablespoon porridge oats
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon almond oil

Method:

1. Mix all the ingredients together.

2. Dampen your skin in the shower, then massage the body polisher all over.

3. Rinse with warm water, followed by a blast of cold water to boost your circulation.

4. Pat your skin dry and apply body lotion.

Avocado and banana face mask

A soothing treat for dry, sensitive and sun-damaged skin

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 ripe avocado, mashed
  • 1/2 ripe banana, mashed
  • 2 tablespoons plain yoghurt
  • 1 teaspoon olive oil

Method:

1. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl.

2. Apply the mask to your face and neck, lie back and relax for 10 - 15 minutes.

3. Rinse off with warm water and admire your soft, soothed complexion!

Fruit smoothie hair conditioner

Suitable for all hair types, particularly good on coloured, treated or sun-parched hair

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 melon
  • 1/2 ripe banana
  • 1/4 ripe avocado
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon plain yoghurt

Method:

1. If the fruit is very ripe, mash together with a fork, or blitz everything in a food processor.

2. Add the olive oil and yoghurt and mix well.

3. Smooth the mixture all over dry hair, wrap in cling film or a warm towel, and let the conditioner sink in for 15 minutes.

4. Rinse with warm water and shampoo as normal. Your hair will be shiny and frizz-free.
